![]() The pupils had been informed a few weeks in advance to design a capsule which would be used to protect a raw egg. ![]() The next activity of the day was the ‘Egg Drop’ challenge. Throughout the exercise of design and problem-solving, it became clear that the triangle-structure is one of the best shapes in building design as it is not easily distorted, making it ideal to carry a load. The exercise allowed us to explore the strut, a structural component designed to resist longitudinal compression, and how these can add strength to a design. This was followed by a construction challenge, in which the pupils where divided into groups of five or six to create a range of 2D and 3D shapes using spaghetti and marshmallows. Our Engineers Kieran Cahill, Rebecca Phelan and Bart Borowiak began the session with a presentation about engineering and some of the projects we have worked on. On 18th April, we had the pleasure to visit Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál school in Dublin to give their year five pupils an insight into a career in Engineering.
